I believe that tedious tasks can be made more enjoyable if they take place in a beautiful environment, and I tackled the design of our new laundry room with this in mind.  The laundry area at #JungalowByTheMountain was relatively spacious and perfectly functional but entirely lacking in personality and vibes — making the chore of doing laundry feel like just that — a chore. I wanted to inject a heavy dose of color and pattern into the space so that the laundry room might feel like a place I might acutally want to be in, like, say, a like a boutique hotel for dirty clothes. Hehe.

A laundry room is a great place to go bold and have fun with color and pattern. Like a powder room, it’s a contained area that doesn’t really need to “go with” surrounding spaces, so there is a perfect opportuntiy to have fun and get a little wild. I chose to install this peel and stick wallpaper  because I wanted something patternful and with a dark ground to match back to the washer and dryer. (To help us calculate the amount of wallpaper we needed we used the very handy Wallpaper Calculator from The Home Depot app). The overall vibe I wanted to to lend to the space was one of magic and mystery.
On the floor, we then installed a cement hex tile in Sage from Zia Tile. We used a very slim grout line and “River Rock” grout color because I wanted the grout lines to be less prominent. We styled it with a Gemology rug from my collection with Loloi Rugs.

I chose Cajun Red and Terracotta Clay by Behr for the paint colors, because I wanted to bring warmth to the space. We used two colors to give the space a bit more dynamism. As a finishing touch, we swapped out the old cabinet hardware for something more modern in black and gold to match back to the wallpaper.

Since the wallpaper we used was peel and stick, I decided to also cover the hideous handrail (that we kept for safety reasons) and it now sort of disappears into the wallpaper pattern. Yay.
Now I can get lost in the wallpaper pattern and the warm tones of the wall and ceiling and dream of doing laundry in Florence, Istanbul or Antigua (just I few places I wouldn’t mind doing laundry in!)
