Build a Sense of Focus

0

November is a busy month for many, myself included. When this is the case in my life, I tend to multitask with urgency, trying to get more done in less time. While multitasking is a thing I’ve often celebrated in the past, I now know that in reality, it only tends to bring about more chaos and stress in my life.

One of the reasons I’ve always been drawn to multitasking is that everything on my list usually feels equally important—even though this is rarely the case. None of us can do it all, all the time. Ultimately, we have to prioritize. We have to make a choice—every minute, every hour, and every day. Where do I want to place my energy? What is my priority at this moment and in this season?

This month on Wit & Delight, our theme is about building—and maintaining—a sense of focus.

It’s about giving our energy to the things we actively choose and letting go of the things we don’t. It’s about deciding on the nonnegotiable elements of our lives that allow us to function at our best and figuring out how to commit to them with renewed attention.

As we move into November, consider taking a moment to reflect on the following questions:

  • When so many things are being asked of me, what are the core daily habits I still want to maintain?
  • Where do I want to focus my energy in the holiday season ahead?
  • What boundaries do I need to set with others and with myself?

Building a sense of focus means slowing down when possible and allowing ourselves the space to determine our list of priorities with care and intention. When I prioritize the things that matter most to me, the benefits are far greater than when I try to get every single thing done. I hope we can all experience a bit more of this sense of focus in the month ahead.
