Tousled Topknot Tutorial – A Beautiful Mess

I’m always looking for easy styles that will add some volume or height to my hair (if you have hair that tends to fall flat as well, then you totally understand the struggle!).

I discovered last summer that the half-up topknot is actually a great way to add some height on top (duh!), and by adding easy waves to the bottom half, you get a more voluminous combo that doesn’t take long at all to complete. Ready to learn the tousled topknot?Start by curling your hair with a bigger barrel (at least 1 1/2″) curling iron or curling wand (I love this curling iron).

I like to wrap my hair around the barrel starting at the inside and going out towards the outside of the barrel as you see above. It seems to make a more natural beachy wave if you ask me. Put the top 3-4″ wide section of your hair into a super high ponytail and pull tight.Use a teasing brush to backcomb your mini ponytail from root to tip to pump up the volume of your bun.Twist your teased ponytail lightly (too tight of a twist will decrease your volume potential)… …and wrap it around the base of your ponytail holder as many times as you have length to create your topknot bun. Pin in place with bobby pins.Use a few sprays of hairspray to keep your bun and waves in place, and you’re ready to head out the door! Easy-peasy, right? Depending on your hair type and texture, you may have to play around with different wand sizes to find the perfect tousled curl look (too small can be “too curly” and too big won’t hold a curl at all for me), but once you find your perfect medium, you’ll be all set!

This is also a good option as the weather starts to warm up a bit and you want to keep your hair out of your face at outdoor events but don’t want to do a full updo (I also think this is an extra cute look with sunglasses too for some reason). Give it a try! xo. Laura
