Meet the bloodiest fighting game ever. Mortal Kombat 11, the latest installment of the famous Mortal Kombat series, is at an impressively low price during the PlayStation Days of Play sale this year. Even the slightest of fighting game fans would do well to pick it up.

It’s $10 for the base game without any of the expansion packs or DLC characters announced after launch. That’s not much of an issue, though, considering that’s still 25 characters that you can pick from in an expansive and diverse starting roster. You can expect series mainstays, including rushdown, zoning, and trap characters — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here are some key points to consider before picking up what might be the most brutal fighting game to exist.

What makes Mortal Kombat 11 so good? Well, it brings together many fan-favorite and guest characters, each with ferociously violent movesets and flair. It’s not like certain platform fighters with “anime sword boys” that blur together. Flashy finishers like the series’ famous Fatalities, Brutalities, and Friendships (which haven’t returned to the series since the Mortal Kombat 3 generation) also add to the game.

NetherRealm also experimented with new mechanics and variations. Fatal Blows offer players a chance to unleash powerful comeback moves when low on health. Various options to strengthen and extend combos (and escape them) allow the game to be picked up by newcomers while maintaining a high skill ceiling. Of course, someone who has the game sense to use the best move at the best time will still trump a button-mashing beginner.

And don’t worry if you’re a beginner! Mortal Kombat 11 has one of the most in-depth tutorials in the series. It also features relatively smooth gameplay and connection for a fighting game. Thanks to its fluid online gameplay, Mortal Kombat 11 enjoyed some popularity over the pandemic, especially in PC and PlayStation tournaments. For comparison, it succeeded where Granblue Fantasy: Versus failed.

Mortal Kombat 11 later came out with the Aftermath and Ultimate expansions, adding more story content and characters to the already expansive roster. If you find out you love Mortal Kombat 11, you can also buy Aftermath for $12 or Ultimate for $10 more. These are almost as good a deal as the base game, considering the DLC add-ons are $40 and $50 at full price respectively.

Don’t buy expansions for the story. Buy them for the character packs. The narrative remains over-the-top and confusing, which some people love, but you’re better off just watching a lore video. Kingdom Hearts is easier to understand. On the bright side, the cinematics are as detailed as ever.

Also, Mortal Kombat 11 is by no means “dead,” but it is technically “finished.” In 2021, NetherRealm confirmed that there wouldn’t be any new content for Mortal Kombat 11 because the studio was now focusing on its “next project.”

“NetherRealm is now focusing on its next project and after more than two years of supporting Mortal Kombat 11, DLC for the game, including characters, has come to an end,” the studio tweeted in July 2021.

NetherRealm’s statement implies that Mortal Kombat 12 would be the next big focus. However, fans also theorized it could be a new Injustice. Either way, Mortal Kombat 11 still has a healthy player base in its current state. Netherrealm hasn’t confirmed any news on Mortal Kombat 12. It’s just that it’s only a matter of time. Look at Street Fighter 6.

Should you buy Mortal Kombat 11? If you’re even vaguely interested in fighting games and don’t mind the gore, then yes. It’s the latest iteration of one of the most popular fighting game series of all time. Even if you don’t like Mortal Kombat 11, just knowing how it feels to play and what you don’t like about it could enhance your palette for fighting games.

You can buy Mortal Kombat 11 for PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 from the PlayStation Store for just $10 until June 9. All DLCs are listed below the game, so you can also browse for any additional content you might want.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The PlayStation Days of Play sale ends on June 9 at 2:59 p.m. EDT.
