0

the death toll in Ukraine continued to rise as invading Russian forces stepped up their onslaught On Sunday. While a fatal airstrike on a military base in the west of the war-torn country killed up to 35 people, bombs in the south killed nine civilians.

Despite the creation of humanitarian corridors to enable evacuations from places under attack, people remain in the crosshairs, particularly in the besieged port of Mariupol, where Russian troops are making it nearly hard for inhabitants to evacuate, receive relief, or even bury their dead.

However, there was a sign of movement in diplomatic talks, with Russian and Ukrainian authorities both stating that “significant progress” had been made.

OVER 30 MISSILES LAUNCHED

Russia fired around 30 cruise missiles against the Yavoriv military facility in Ukraine’s Lviv area, killing at least 35 people and injuring 134 others. The 360-square-kilometer (140-square-mile) complex is one of Ukraine’s largest, as well as the largest in the country’s western region, and is only 25 kilometers from the Polish border.

The bombing signaled an escalation of the current conflict because it came dangerously close to a Nato member nation. If Russia’s invasion spreads to Nato member states, US President Joe Biden has stated that the alliance will defend every inch of its land.

RUSSIA EXTENDS ITS PRESSURE IN UKRAINE

Russian troops are making deeper gains into Ukraine after beginning a multi-front operation, despite fierce resistance from defense forces and citizen volunteers alike. Russian forces have been pounding Mykolaiv, a crucial city in the southern port of Odesa, with nine civilians killed in airstrikes on Sunday.

According to Reuters, Russian forces moving from Crimea are aiming to avoid Mykolayiv as they head west towards Odesa, citing British intelligence inputs. Vladimir Putin’s troops attempted to surround Ukrainian forces as they pushed from the port of Mariupol in the south to the second city of Kharkiv in the north in eastern Ukraine.

The airport in Ivano-Frankivsk, a city in western Ukraine south of Lviv, was also hit by Russian airstrikes.
