Government figures for 2019 show Pakistan was the top recipient of that year for bilateral aid – £305 million – and has received the most from the UK for some years now.

Despite expressing concern about the fallout from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the South Asian nation has stopped short of condemning it.

Pakistan has provisionally contracted Moscow to build a lucrative natural gas pipeline to run through the country.

The project was estimated to cost about $2.5 billion (£2.1 billion) with Russia benefiting significantly.

However, the war in Ukraine has triggered a mounting humanitarian crisis in Europe and raised the prospect of nuclear conflict.

So, should the UK divert its foreign aid to Pakistan and instead send it to Ukraine? Or should it be spent on strengthening the UK’s military?
