BCCI idea of selling rights to multiple broadcasters shot down

Since its inception, the media rights of the IPL have been sold to a single party & EXCLUSIVITY has been the name of the game.

But the BCCI this time was mulling to sell some of the IPL Rights package in a non-exclusive format to attract more broadcasters & more revenues – exactly like the way EPL sell its rights.

“Neither IPL is still such a mature project, nor India is a market like United Kingdom. EPL sells rights in multiple packages to multiple broadcasters because of the way their market is designed. In India no broadcaster would buy such a package. Exclusivity to the rights is the name of game in India.”, declared top broadcast honcho to InsideSport

How the media rights sales is conducted in EPL? The English Premier League has global media rights revenues of around $3.9bn in 2021.

The BCCI was mulling to follow the EPL model.

The English Premier League (EPL) rights in its domestic market is sold in 7 packages to different broadcasters.

Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video and BBC Sport have all got rights to broadcast the football matches.

BCCI too was mulling such a plan.

According to available information, KPMG, the BCCI Consultants for the IPL Media Rights tender presented the idea to create a non-exclusive category exactly on the lines of EPL.

But the idea has been dropped after lukewarm response from the forces with in the BCCI as well as other stakeholders.

IPL 2022 Media Rights – IPL Strategic Timeout Duration Increase? Another idea that is being mulled is to increase the duration of IPL Strategic Timeout.

From 150 Seconds to 180 Seconds: To help broadcasters recoup their investment, the BCCI is also believed to be planning to increase the strategic timeout duration to three minutes from the existing 150 seconds.

Usually, there are about 100 units of 30 seconds each (about 3000 seconds) for advertisements, including timeouts, in an IPL game.

Extended timeout duration means more time for the inventories.

When will IPL Media Rights Tender Released? It was expected that IPL Media Rights tender will be released before the end of month of February. But now the tender is likely to be released in next 5-10 days.
