Manchester City have seen their lead at the top of the Premier League table cut to just six points by Liverpool, who have a game in hand over the defending champions.
City took to the field on Saturday having seen Liverpool belatedly come good against struggling Norwich. The Canaries had taken the lead early in the second half at Anfield, but goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, who has hit the ground running in the Premier League, secured a 3-1 victory.

Pep Guardiola’s side were unable to respond. After four minutes they trailed to a goal from Dejan Kulusevski on his first Premier League start. Ilkay Gundogan drew City level 12 minutes before the break, but Harry Kane netted on the hour mark. The points seemed destined to be shared as Riyad Mahrez converted a stoppage-time penalty, but there was still time for Kane, who was in superb form, to find a winner.
Chelsea, meanwhile, struggled to secure a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. Hakim Ziyech’s late strike keeps the Blues comfortably in third place.
There was also a victory for Arsenal as they edged Brentford 2-1 to avenge the defeat they had suffered on the opening night of the season.
West Ham, though, missed the chance to move back into fourth as they were held 1-1 by Newcastle.
Indeed, it was largely a good day for the sides towards the foot of the standings. Burnley recorded a surprisingly easy 3-0 win over Brighton and Watford stunned Aston Villa with a 1-0 victory away from home.
Everton, meanwhile, have been left looking over their shoulders after losing to Southampton. Frank Lampard’s side are now 16th and are just four points clear of the bottom three.
Manchester United are in action on Sunday with a trip to Leeds, while Wolves play host to Leicester.
