Teams retained players for their ability to win games in IPL 2022. They have a proven track record or have demonstrated such exceptional potential that franchises would rather retain them than let them go to auction and be purchased by someone else. However, with the exception of a few, most of the players held back by the original eight organizations have not lived up to expectations.

Mumbai Indians: Retaining four players has yielded mixed outcomes. Surya Kumar Yadav has been on fire, and Jasprit Bumrah has lived up to his hype. However, this has not been enough for the five-time previous champions to make an impact. MI has been severely harmed by the poor form of the other retainers, Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard. These two stalwarts have both played key roles in their previous victories, one as an opener and the other as a finisher.

CSK: Of the players retained, only Moeen Ali and skipper MS Dhoni have shown any signs of life. Moeen played an important role in CSK’s recent victory as an all-rounder, but he hasn’t been in the same kind of form since. Dhoni has worked hard to reverse his aging as a batsman, but age has certainly caught up with him. Ruturaj Gaikwad, a young hopeful whose daring approach as an opener in the previous two seasons made him the buzz of the IPL, only found his groove after multiple matches were lost. Ravindra Jadeja, the team’s leading all-rounder, has been the biggest letdown.
KKR: With bat and ball, big-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell has been an excellent value. Sunil Narine, his Caribbean colleague, had only 8 wickets from 10 matches and not many runs to show for it. Narine has been an important part of the team’s success in the past, but this season has been a letdown. The other two retainers were Indians who had fought their way into the national squad following outstanding performances in the previous two seasons.
RCB: The star retainer, talismanic batsman Virat Kohli, is going through hell. Among the finest in the IPL since its establishment, Kohli’s worst sequence of scores this season has not only generated several red flags but also worries about his future in Indian cricket. Mohamed Siraj has had a dismal season thus far, and Maxwell has had a modest one, despite his contribution to the team’s victory in the previous game Teams retained players.
Punjab Kings: Arshdeep Singh has been fantastic in the death overs again, earning his retention. Not so for Mayank Agarwal, who was also appointed captain. The opening batter started well but has struggled to maintain form, leaving Punjab’s development mainly reliant on overseas stars Kagiso Rabada, Liam Livingstone, and Dhanuka Rajapaksa.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: kept three players. Kane Williamson and two J&K youths, Adbul Samad and Umran Malik Umran, who bowls at supersonic speeds, have been the most impressive of the three and are already grabbing global attention. After a string of failures, hard-hitting batsman Samad has been benched. So far, the biggest setback has been Williamson’s sluggish form, which belies his huge stature as a skilled batsman Teams retained players.

Delhi Capitals: Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel, and Anrich Nortje remained with the Delhi Capitals.The first three mentioned have had mediocre success. Shaw has batted brilliantly, but he is a temperamental player who may lose his wicket for no apparent reason. Pant has received no major knocks so far, but he has been consistent. Axar has performed admirably with both the ball and the bat, however, his wicket-taking prowess has not been as impressive as it was the previous season. However, Nortje, who was in fantastic form last year, has been largely unnoticeable due to injury and/or bad performance.
Rajasthan Royals: Retained three players, two of whom, Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson, have performed admirably, justifying the franchise’s faith in them and the money they were paid. Buttler, in particular, has been in commanding form. Yashaswi Jaiswal, a promising young opener, was a frustrating failure, unable to even hold on to his spot in the playing XI until the penultimate match when he made the most of his recall with an aggressive half-century that has taken RR to the brink of a place in the play-offs.
