Last night, the extravaganza known as the Met Gala, the annual benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, was held in New York City.

The dress code was “gilded glamour,” a reference to the Gilded Age in America. “Think fashion between 1870 and 1890. Think Astors, Vanderbilts, Whitneys and Edith Wharton books. Think gold, corsets, bustles and big sleeves. Think white tie, not black. Think excess!” wrote Vanessa Friedman, The New York Times’s chief fashion critic, in her preview.
