While the Gregorian calendar is widely used in the West, the Islamic calendar is lunar, meaning it is dependent on the sighting of the crescent moon. As a result, the months of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr occur 10-11 days earlier each year depending on when the crescent moon is observed. Because lunar months are shorter than solar months, the length of the lunar month varies by around a day from country to country.
The crescent of Ramadan is traditionally first seen in Saudi Arabia and portions of India, as well as the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and other Western countries, and then a day later in the rest of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other South Asian countries.
The Saudi Supreme Court has ordered Muslims in the Kingdom to see the crescent of Shawwal on Saturday night, April 30 2022, which will be Ramadan 29 1443 AH. According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), anyone who can see the Shawwal crescent with the naked eye or using binoculars must report to the nearest court and submit their testimony.
Saudi’s Minister of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance Sheikh Dr. Abdullatif Bin Abdulaziz Al Al-Sheikh has reportedly directed the ministry’s branches to prepare all mosques and outdoor chapels to receive worshipers for Eid Al-Fitr prayers, which will begin at the end of the working day on Saturday, April 30, 2022, which corresponds to Ramadan 29.
This is because the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) announced earlier that the private and non-profit sectors will observe a four-day Eid-ul-Fitr holiday in the Kingdom. According to the Umm Al-Qura calendar, Al Al-Sheikh has set the timing for Eid Al-Fitr prayers at 15 minutes after sunrise this year, 1443 Hijri.
The Ministry of Justice of the United Arab Emirates and religious authorities in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Morocco, Muscat, Yemen, Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Syria, and Palestine, as well as other Gulf states, issued separate appeals on Friday, urging local residents to see the crescent moon of Shawwal on Saturday evening, April 30, 2022, after maghrib prayers. “The committee will convene after Maghreb prayers on Saturday, April 30, 2022, corresponding to the 29th of Ramadan 1443H at Abu Dhabi Judicial Department to spot the crescent,” according to government sources.
According to local media sources in Saudi Arabia, numerous astronomers have predicted that Ramadan 1443H will last 30 days because there are fewer chances of seeing the crescent on Saturday evening. Muslims in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other neighboring countries will prepare to see the Shawwal crescent on May 1, 2022, because South Asian countries see the crescent moon a day later.
If the crescent moon is visible, Eid will be celebrated on May 2, 2022 in these nations; however, if there is no report of the crescent moon being sighted, another fast will be observed on May 2 and Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated the following day. After consulting with members of the Australian Fatwa Council and local and global observatories, Australia has already determined Monday, May 2, to be the first day of Shawwal and the start of Eid Al-Fitr.
“The Australian Fatwa Council is pleased to announce the following to the Australian Muslim community,” said an official statement from the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), which is the only central, Islamic body with important representation from Australian-based Muslim clerics. After contacting members of the Australian Fatwa Council and conducting additional research with local and international observatories, it has been determined that the month of Ramadan 1443AH will end on Sunday, May 1, 2022. The first day of Shawwal 1443AH (sic) and the first day of Eid Al-Fitr will be Monday, May 2nd, 2022.
Muslims in the United States (USA), the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, Germany, and other countries will also see the crescent on April 30th and will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on either Sunday, May 01, or Monday, May 02, 2022, depending on whether the crescent is visible.
