Real Madrid are on the verge of winning the 35th La Liga title of their history.

The Blancos beat Osasuna 3-1 in Pamplona on Wednesday to go 17 points clear.

David Alaba gave them the lead on 12 minutes but they were pegged back by Ante Budimir’s equaliser a minute after.

Marco Asensio put Madrid back ahead on the stroke of half-time as Carlo Ancelotti’s men went into the break 2-1 up.

Into the second half and Karim Benzema incredibly missed two penalties in seven minutes. But it wasn’t costly as Lucas Vazquez finished the game off in injury time.

Madrid could be champions this weekend.

On Monday, Madrid were presented with a gift from rivals Barcelona, who suffered a stunning 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cadiz at Camp Nou.

Although Xavi’s side still have a game in hand, the unexpected reverse leaves the Catalans with little more ambition than simply securing a Champions League place next season.

Barcelona are next in action on Thursday when they travel to the Basque Country to play Real Sociedad.

Ronaldo or Messi: Who has scored more hattricks?

Atletico Madrid temporarily went one point ahead of Barcelona on Wednesday despite a disappointing 0-0 home draw with Granada.

Diego Simeone won’t be altogether pleased with the performance and result as it means the teams outside the top four can once again make a fight out of the race for a Champions League spot.

In Wednesday’s other game, Getafe moved further away from the relegation zone by winning 2-0 at Celta Vifgo.

Borja Mayoral scored twice for Getafe to give them a vital win that moves them up to 35 points, five points outside the relegation zone with five games left.
