Former NRL star James Maloney has tested positive for a banned recreational substance, according to reports from France.

French newspaper L’Independent write that the 35-year old, who played 249 NRL games for five different teams before leaving the competition at the end of 2019, failed a test after a match on March 19.

Maloney has reportedly been suspended for club Lezignan following the positive test, with the case yet to be further investigated by the French Anti-Doping Agency.
