MP propose a law to regulate social media ads

Five parliamentarians submitted a proposal for a law to regulate advertising activity through social networking sites.

MP Muhannad Al-Sayer, Abdul-Mudhaf, Dr. Badr Al-Mulla, Dr. Hassan Gohar, and Muhalhal Al-Mudhaf submitted a proposal that anyone who engages in advertising activity through social networking sites, whether through his personal account or otherwise, must obtain a prior license from the ministry. This also applies to advertisements that are circulated on social networking sites. The proposal also stipulates that the account holder is responsible for the content of his account.

Parliamentarians stressed that with the increasing reliance of companies and suppliers on famous social media sites in advertising, it is necessary to have a law regulating such advertising activities. The law is to preserve all rights for both parties and create a healthy and suitable business environment for practicing advertising activities through social networking sites on the Internet.

The law defines several conditions for granting a license to engage in advertising activity through social networking sites. It is also prohibited to display any advertising material on social media that contains an offence against national unity, incites racial, sectarian or factional violence, or includes an obscene act.
