You probably don’t know this, but if you were to drive from Aberdeen, Scotland, directly to Marseille, France, it would take you less than a full day!
When you look at a map, they seem so far away that you would never even imagine getting on the road for such a long trip. But in truth, this is the kind of travel that you will never forget, as you cross both the UK and France, from North to South.
You can do it all in your own car, at your own pace. Imagine taking a road trip through picturesque Scottish villages, stopping to take in the breathtaking views of Loch Ness and the Highlands. Then, as you cross over into France, you’ll drive through charming towns like Dijon and Lyon before finally arriving in sunny Marseille.
But this isn’t just any ordinary road trip – it’s an adventure that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. You’ll experience different cultures, taste new foods and see stunning landscapes along the way.
So why not take on this challenge? Pack up your car with snacks and supplies for an epic journey across two countries. Don’t let distance hold you back from experiencing everything Europe has to offer – start planning now!
Here are some of the locations that you will discover and forever hold in your memory.
Crossing the Channel
You may be wondering how you will cross the channel between the UK and France.
You will do so by using the Eurostar train that leaves from London to Paris. It is better to drop your rental car in the UK and get another one in France. This way you don’t have to drive it all the way back. You just leave the car in Marseille and take your flight out from there.
Trust me, using the Eurostar train is not only convenient, it is a luxurious experience. You will be able to sit back and relax while you enjoy the journey through/under the English Channel. Plus, you won’t have to worry about traffic or navigating unfamiliar roads.
In addition, dropping off your rental car in the UK and picking it up in France will save you time and money. The cost of renting a car for an extended period can add up quickly, especially when it comes to insurance fees.
Scotland and Britain
The beauty of Scotland and Britain resides in the cold and gray weather that you are bound to encounter. It is also in the humour of its people, although it may take a while for you to understand it. But by the time you get to London, you will have met a lot of friendly faces.
So why not start your next vacation in Scotland and the United Kingdom? With its stunning scenery, rich history and vibrant culture, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience. From the majestic castles of Edinburgh to the bustling streets of London, there’s something for everyone.
But it’s not just about sightseeing – Scotland and the UK offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a different way of life. You can sample traditional Scottish cuisine like haggis or try your hand at local activities like bagpiping or Highland dancing.
And don’t forget the shopping! Whether you’re looking for high-end fashion on Bond Street or quirky souvenirs at a street market, there are plenty of options.
Aberdeen
To start your travel, enjoy the northern feel of Aberdeen, by discovering the nature that surrounds it. It is a city by the sea, so take a walk on its shore. That is how you will also end this trip, when you get to Marseille.
These experiences will be so diverse, that it will make you think of the sea in a completely different way, forever.
But Aberdeen is not just about the sea. It has a rich history and culture that is not to be missed. Visit its museums, such as the Maritime Museum or the Tolbooth Museum, to learn more about its past.
And if you are a foodie, Aberdeen will definitely satisfy your taste buds with its fresh seafood and local delicacies. Don’t forget to try the famous fish and chips!
Edinburgh
When you get to Edinburgh, you need to see the city from higher ground, to really enjoy its beauty. To do so, there are two geological formations that you can visit, which are Arthur’s Seat and Calton Hill.
If the weather gets cold and the sky is gray, you may want to spend some time indoor at the National Museum of Scotland, which features world cultures, science and technology and Scottish history (amongst other themes).
When the weather turns cold and the sky is gray, you might want to spend some time indoors at the National Museum of Scotland, which covers world cultures, science and technology, and Scottish history, among other things.

And if you’re looking for entertainment after dinner, the city has plenty of pubs with live music or comedy shows that will make your night unforgettable.
Liverpool
Moving from the East Coast to the West Coast, and from Scotland to Britain, you will find a completely different vibe in Liverpool. The one thing that you cannot miss in this city, is a visit to the Cavern Club, where The Beatles’ adventure started.
Most of the important UK bands and artists stopped there at some point in their career, as well.
But Liverpool is not just about the music scene. It’s a city with a rich history, stunning architecture and friendly people. You can explore the Royal Albert Dock, visit Liverpool Cathedral, or take a stroll through Sefton Park.
And if you’re looking for a little shopping therapy, Liverpool won’t disappoint. From high-end fashion stores to independent boutiques and vintage shops, there’s something for everyone.
But what really sets Liverpool apart from other British cities is its passion for soccer. The local team – Liverpool FC – has one of the most dedicated fan bases in Europe, and watching them play at Anfield is an experience like no other.
Whether you’re into music, culture or sport, there’s plenty to see and do in this vibrant city on Merseyside. Don’t miss out on all it has to offer!
London
Before you arrive in London, you could stop by Cardiff. But if you want to save some time and stay in London for a few days, in order to enjoy the great entertainment that it offers, it may be just as well.

But don’t just take my word for it. London has been voted one of the top tourist destinations in Europe for a reason. With its rich history, diverse culture and endless entertainment options, it’s no wonder millions of people flock here every year.
France
Moving from the UK to France will be a real shock. You will suddenly see and feel the difference between Europe and England. France has similarities with its neighbors, like Spain and Italy, but very few with the island sitting on top of them.
Paris
The difference in sunlight will already be felt, when you get to Paris. Whereas the London charm gets even more powerful at night, it is in the day that Paris possesses all its splendor.
It would be a pity not to visit some of its most popular locations, such as L’Opéra Garnier, le Château de Versailles and the Louvres Museum. Still, there are some lesser sites, like the house of the sculptor Rodin, that will simply blow you away.
And let’s not forget the food! Paris is known for its incredible cuisine, from croissants and baguettes to escargot and foie gras. The city is a culinary paradise that will tantalize your taste buds with every bite.
But it’s not just the sights and flavors that make Paris so special. It’s also the atmosphere – there’s something magical in the air that makes you feel alive, inspired and full of wonder.
Again, stay a few days in Paris, before you head to your next destination.
Dijon
There are many other cities to visit in France, but for the sake of your itinerary, we chose Dijon.
Not that you won’t be fully satisfied by this choice, especially if you are a wine lover. As the capital city of Burgundy, you can visit many wineries in the area, where you will discover wines that will send your palate straight to heaven.
But Dijon is not just about wine. It’s a city full of history, culture and gastronomy that will leave you wanting more. From the Gothic cathedral Notre-Dame de Dijon to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, there are many cultural attractions to explore.
And let’s talk food! Have you ever tried traditional French mustard? Well, in Dijon you can taste some of the best mustards in France. And don’t forget to try escargots (snails), coq au vin (chicken cooked in red wine) or boeuf bourguignon (beef braised in red wine). These dishes are just a few examples of Burgundy cuisine at its finest.
Lyon
Lyon is one of the most sophisticated cities in France. You will find beautiful boutiques, where you can buy elegant clothes. You will eat food that is created to please your stomach. Just be careful, or you will gain weight rapidly.
Finally, you will get to see the two rivers that pass through Lyon: An amazing sight, especially at night.
But Lyon is more than just a pretty face. It’s a city of history, culture and innovation. The old town of Lyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its beautiful architecture and rich cultural heritage.
And let’s not forget the city’s gastronomic scene! Lyon has been called the “food capital” of France for good reason – it boasts over 4,000 restaurants serving traditional Lyonnaise cuisine as well as international dishes that will make your taste buds dance.
If you’re looking to experience all that France has to offer, look no further than Lyon. With its stunning scenery, delicious food and vibrant culture, there really is something for everyone.
Marseille
When you finally get to Marseille, you will probably be a little tired. You will be happy to find yourself in a city where the sun shines fully.
Spend a few days lazing around on a beach close-by, and take a boat tour to the Calanques. Then you can say goodbye to France and go back home.
But wait, before you make that decision, let me tell you about the hidden gems of Marseille. It is a melting pot of cultures and history. It has something for everyone – from art to architecture, food to fashion.
Take a stroll through the old port area where fishermen still bring in their daily catch. Visit the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica, which offers stunning panoramic views of the city below. Explore the Le Panier district with its colorful houses and narrow streets lined with trendy boutiques and cafes.
Don’t forget to try some local delicacies like bouillabaisse (a traditional fish soup) or socca (a chickpea pancake). And if you’re feeling adventurous, take a day trip to nearby Cassis for some wine tasting or hiking in the Calanques National Park.
Marseille may not be as popular as Paris or Nice, but it’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary. You won’t regret extending your stay here, as there’s so much more to do than just enjoy the beaches and boat rides!
