I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I love making special food for the holidays! It’s such a simple way to bring smiles to my family and friends and create fond memories. The food doesn’t need to be complicated or fancy. Just something unique for the holiday that adds some extra fun to the table.

This Carrot Cheese Ball fits the bill perfectly. It takes just about the same amount of effort as a regular cheese ball, but makes such a cute springtime centerpiece. You can make it ahead, which is always convenient when entertaining. But the most important thing is just how tasty it is. Cheesy, creamy, incredibly flavorful, and packed with fresh shredded carrots. It’s absolutely delicious with crackers, bread, and veggies. And perfect as an appetizer for Easter dinner or brunch.

Ingredients for Carrot Cheese Ball

  • Cream Cheese– We used regular cream cheese. Neufchatel cheese works well here too.
  • Shredded Carrots– We finely shredded our carrots with a food processor attachment. You can also shred them with a regular grater. We also used paper towels to blot some of the moisture out of the carrots after shredding.
  • Cheddar Cheese– We used medium cheddar, but sharp cheddar would also be delicious and add to the nice bright color!
  • Worcestershire Sauce– Our favorite seasoning for cheese balls! It adds so much rich flavor. If you don’t have it, you can try using soy sauce instead.
  • Garlic Salt– You can also substitute 1/4 tsp garlic powder + 1/4 tsp salt.
  • Onion Powder– This also adds yummy flavor. Grated fresh onion works great too! You would want to use about 1 tablespoon fresh grated onion in place of the onion powder.

How to Make a Carrot Cheese Ball

  1. In a large mixing bowl with electric beaters, combine the cream cheese, garlic salt, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Beat until smooth, then stir in the grated carrots and 1/2 cup of the cheddar cheese.
  2. Lay a sheet of plastic wrap on the counter.  Spray with cooking spray and place the cheese mixture in the center. Gather up the edges of the plastic wrap to shape the cheese into a triangle shape. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. The flavor will get even better as it chills!
  3. Remove from the fridge. Place the cheese ball on a serving platter. Gently reshape if necessary. Cover the outside of the cheese ball with the remaining cheddar cheese, pressing to adhere.
  4. Trim the broccoli and arrange at the top of the cheese ball to resemble the carrot greens. If desired, give them a quick blanche. It will give your broccoli a lovely, bright green color. You can do this by submerging the broccoli in boiling water for about 30 seconds, or put in a microwave safe bowl in a few tablespoons of water. Cover and microwave on high for 1 minute.
  5. Serve your Carrot Cheese Ball with crackers, chunks of bread, apple slices, and assorted vegetables.
  6. Enjoy!

You can make your cheese ball up 3-5 days in advance. Wait to coat it in cheese until you are ready to serve.

How long will cheese balls last in the fridge?

You can store your leftover cheese ball 5-7 days in an airtight container in the fridge.

What can I add to my cheese ball?

One of the things I love about cheese balls is how easy it is to customize them! Some of our favorite add-ins are finely chopped dried apricots, chopped nuts, chopped spinach, chipotle peppers in adobo, or bacon bits.

  • 16 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup finely grated carrots
  • 1 1/2 cups finely grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup broccoli florets trimmed into bite size pieces
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, garlic salt, onion powder, and worcestershire sauce. Beat together with an electric hand mixer. When smooth, fold in the grated carrots and 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese.

  • Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap on your counter and spray with cooking spray. Place the cheese mixture in the center. Gather up the edges of the plastic wrap to shape the cheese into a triangle shape. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  • Remove from the fridge and gently place triangle onto the center your serving platter. Reshaped with your hands if needed. Cover the triangle with the remaining 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese and pat down so that it sticks to the cream cheese mixture.

  • Trim broccoli so that the florets are small and bite size. Arrange the broccoli at the top of the cheese ball to make the greens on a carrot. 

  • Serve with crackers and veggie sticks. Enjoy!
