What Is Rum Punch?
Fruit punch refers to a mixture of various fruit juices – rum punch is the boozed-up version. Like fruit punch, this cocktail doesn’t come with a strict set of ingredients. There are a million different ways to make it with the base elements being rum and lime juice.
Sometimes too much freedom can complicate things, or at least that’s how I felt while developing this recipe. I tried so many combinations in pursuit of the ultimate rum punch, I almost reached the point of giving up a couple of times, and then I suddenly struck gold. This pineapple masterpiece is hands-down one of my new favorite drinks!
Recipe Ingredients
I’m proud to present the trusty ingredients that make this cocktail such a treat. Specific amounts are included in the recipe card toward the bottom of this post.
- Coconut Rum: I love the brand RumHaven, but Malibu is another good option that may be easier to find.
- White Rum: To supplement the booze in the coconut rum without going overboard on the coconut flavor.
- Pineapple Juice: Fresh pineapple juice is ideal, but you can use the canned stuff if preferred.
- Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed.
- Orange Juice: Squeeze your own juice for the best results.
- Ginger Ale: This adds a hint of flavor and some mild carbonation.
What Kind of Rum Should I Use?
A lot of people make rum punch with a combination of dark rum and light rum. Others use dark rum and coconut rum. I love the flavor I get with light rum and coconut rum, but any of these combinations will do. Feel free to mess around with different duos and ratios if you’re in the mood to experiment.
How to Make Pineapple Rum Punch
You don’t need a background in bartending to perfect this pineapple cocktail. Just a pitcher and some ice!
Combine Ingredients: Add all of the ingredients to a pitcher and stir them together.
Pour Into Glasses With Ice: Pour each serving of rum punch into a cocktail glass filled with ice.
Garnish & Serve: Garnish each drink with a pineapple wedge, lime or orange slices and a fresh mint sprig.
Tips for Success
Get familiar with these tips and tricks before you grab your pitcher. Next stop – rum punch heaven.
- Use Fresh Fruit Juices: You’re not going to get the best results with bottled fruit juices. Take the time to squeeze your own fruit for truly flawless cocktails. If anything, at least make sure the lime juice is fresh. Any bottled alternatives you use should be 100% juice.
- Pour Servings as You Go: I like to pour these cocktails as I serve them instead of filling all the cups at once. As the drinks sit, the ice cubes will slowly melt and water them down.
- Ice Cube Hack: If you’re the kind of person who likes to sip on your mixed drink slowly, I recommend making your ice out of additional pineapple and/or orange juice. This keeps your cocktails from getting watery.
Variation Ideas
Rum punch is one of the most customizable cocktails out there. Here are a few easy ways to alter this recipe:
- Make It Frozen: Want to make this drink even more refreshing? Use a blender to pulse the combined cocktail ingredients with about 6 cups of crushed ice, working in batches if needed. Add more ice if you want a thicker consistency. Keep in mind that your frozen cocktails will not be carbonated.
- Substitute the Rum: Instead of rum, feel free to use vodka, prosecco, champagne, or any other alcohol of your choice. Get creative!
- Make It Alcohol-Free: If you’d like, you can omit the alcohol altogether and make virgin rum punches. Substitute the rum for sprite, club soda, ginger beer or additional ginger ale.
- Change Up the Flavor: Looking to swap out the lime juice for lemon juice or replace half the pineapple juice with pomegranate juice? Be my guest.
Serving Suggestions
Go ahead and serve these cocktails with any munchie you’re craving. It’s pretty much impossible to make a wrong move! I particularly enjoy pairing my rum punch with Honey Garlic Grilled Shrimp or Spinach and Goat Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms. These nutty Pesto Polenta Bites are another stellar choice and you can never go wrong with an Epic Cheese Board.
Can I Make This In Advance?
Sure! Just leave out the ginger ale and stir it in right before serving. Combine all of the other cocktail ingredients and refrigerate the mixture in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
