Savor the Moment | Wit & Delight June 2022 Monthly Theme

0

Summer has always been a whirlwind of socializing for me. The warm weather and buzz of activity get me excited for all the season holds—flowers in full bloom, food passed around tables, long nights spent catching up with friends, and more.

While all of this doing is fun, I want to ensure I’m actually enjoying each moment as it happens. It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s next, especially in seasons that offer so much to look forward to. If I’m not intentional about delighting in what’s in front of me, it will fly past me. And I think that’s a tragedy in a sense.

This June on Wit & Delight, our theme is all about what it means to savor the moment.

For me, savoring means taking a break in the day to simply sit outside and be. It means enjoying the perfect bite of a meal. It means playing with my kids. Savoring means looking around the yard, watching the wind move through the trees, and noticing animals as they pass through.

Savoring is not about doing all the things or getting the absolute most out of your schedule. Rather, it’s about realizing what’s important to you. It’s about prioritizing those things when possible and focusing on them fully when they’re happening.

The brain is not necessarily equipped to appreciate all the facets of being alive (especially for those of us with mental illnesses like anxiety or depression). Its core motive is to help us survive and respond to danger cues, whether those cues pose an imminent or, in most cases, perceived threat. With that in mind, I know I can’t simply savor every single moment with effortless ease. And yet, I can try when it is possible.

As you enter the month of June, I invite you to think about what it means for you to savor the moment. What are your favorite small delights of summer? How can you enjoy these moments with more intention?

The act of savoring may feel frivolous in a sense. However, I think focusing on the joys of the present moment, no matter how small, is fundamental to what our souls need.

The act of savoring may feel frivolous in a sense. However, I think focusing on the joys of the present moment, no matter how small, is fundamental to what our souls need. To savor the moment is an act of self-love and compassion, and that’s something we all deserve.

This June on witanddelight.com, our contributors will be writing about why our private and public lives provide different kinds of joy (and why we need both), and tips for hosting when you don’t have a dining table. I’ll be sharing my 2022 summer bucket list, a fun little update in the kids’ room, and reasons to love your closed-concept home. Stay tuned for this and plenty more throughout the month ahead!
