Here are five players who were retained and failed to live up to expectations:
Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings) – The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, Ravindra Jadeja has can be considered a big flop as he failed both as a player and a captain. In 9 matches of the tournament, Jadeja has 113 runs and five wickets, a return that is relatively low from his standards. Jadeja was first pick of retained players ahead of MS Dhoni, but a poor return coupled with bad team form has seen him relinquish his captaincy.
Mayank Agarwal (Punjab Kings) – Another captain who has failed to deliver in the ongoing season of the IPL is Mayank Agarwal. The Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain was retained for a price tag of Rs 12 crore but he has failed to deliver. So far in 9 matches, Mayank has scored 161 runs in 9 matches, with an average of 20.13 and has failed to justify the price tag. On the captaincy side he was handed the reins ahead of Shikhar Dhawan and has so far had mix fortunes with five wins and five defeats.
Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians) – Kieron Pollard was retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of many other deserving candidates, but this decision has backfired terribly. The West Indies star has failed to lay down a marker in the tournament having scored just 117 runs and scalping three wickets.

Venkatesh Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders) – Kolkata Knight Riders showed a lot of faith in Venkatesh Iyer as they retained him for Rs 8 crore, snubbing Shubman Gill. However he has quickly gone from being a major hit to a super flop and is now warming the bench for KKR. Venkatesh was dropped by KKR in their recent encounter and it is an early indicator of his slump in form. In IPL 2022 he has played 9 matches and contributed 132 runs while KKR’s opening spot puzzle continued.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rajasthan Royals) – Having scored 249 runs in the 2021 season and with a promising career ahead, Yashasvi Jaiswal was retained for a big price tag by the Rajasthan Royals (RR), but so far he has been a big flop. In just three matches so far Jaiswal has contributed only 25 runs and has largely warmed the RR bench with other players contributing in tandem. Jaiswal’s Rs 4 crore price tag looks like a bad investment for RR.
