Manchester United’s hope of finishing in the top four of the Premier League were dealt an enormous blow on Saturday, despite Arsenal suffering a surprise defeat.
After Newcastle defeated Wolves 1-0 on Friday – a result that should have given Ralf Rangnick’s side some impetus coming into their match against Everton – Man Utd suffered a similar defeat at Goodison Park.
A single goal from Anthony Gordon midway through the first half was sufficient to get the better of the Red Devils, who could ill-afford any mistakes as they chase down the final Champions League spot.
With Arsenal losing at home to Brighton in the 3pm kick offs, it seemed that Man Utd may be given an unexpected reprieve. The Gunners went down 2-1, with their reply coming late in the game.
However, Tottenham landed a huge blow in the race for the Champions League next season as they went to Aston Villa and won 4-0. Son Heung-min caught the headlines with a hat-trick in Birmingham, but Harry Kane had a big role to play as he directly set up two and created the other with a shot that was blocked. Dejan Kulusevski was Spurs’ other ace as he scored one and created another.
Antonio Conte’s side moved onto 57 points with the victory – six clear of Man Utd with just seven games of the season remaining.
Meanwhile, Chelsea showed that their heavy defeat to Brentford last weekend was little more than a wobble as they dismantled Southampton 6-0. The Blues are eight-points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, albeit the Gunners have played one game fewer. Thomas Tuchel’s side, then, still have some work to do.
In Saturday’s other fixture, Leeds dealt another huge blow into the survival hopes of Watford with a 3-0 win away from home.
Four games take place on Sunday, including the much-anticipated clash between Manchester City and Liverpool that has the potential to go a long way to deciding who will finish top of the Premier League table at the end of the season.
