With 2021 firmly in the rearview mirror, Hollywood’s months-long awards season is set to come to a close with the 94th Academy Awards, the Super Bowl of movies. While the ongoing pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the box office — overall revenues in 2021 are expected to be around half of what they were in a record-breaking 2019, there has been a flood of films arriving as COVID-delayed productions resumed production.
In February, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences flirted with disaster when it disclosed plans to eliminate eight category awards from the show’s broadcast in order to keep it under three hours long. However, in response to widespread outcry from fans and filmmakers, the Academy has reversed its decision, and the awards will instead be pre-recorded right before the program and then edited in during the broadcast.
With everything out of the way, let’s get down to business: how and where to watch, as well as what you should know about this year’s nominees.
How can I watch the Oscars?
Whether you’re a long-time cable TV customer or a cord-cutter, it’s easier than ever to watch the Oscars live. The show premieres on ABC on Sunday, March 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET, with a 7:00 p.m. pre-show. The Academy will present honors in the eight categories that were nearly cut: Documentary Short, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music Score, Production Design, Live Action Short, Animated Short, and Sound during the first hour of the show. It’s unclear whether the earlier award ceremonies will be broadcast live on television. However, it’s unclear whether those tapings will also be televised live during the pre-show.
The most convenient method to see all of this is on ABC, which broadcasts the Academy Awards event. If you don’t have access to television on Sunday night, you can watch the show online via ABC’s website or the ABC app if you have a cable provider sign-in. The Oscars website has a list of approved cable providers, as well as information for individuals who live outside of the United States.
There are other streaming cable companies in this mix. The show will be available on Hulu with Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV Now, Sling TV, and FuboTV, among other platforms. You’ll need to sign up for a membership, but most of these programs offer free trials. So you have options.
Who are the Oscar nominees for 2022?

Encanto, a Disney Pixar film, should also garner some attention. While Lin-Manuel Miranda’s song “Dos Oruguitas” is competing for Best Original Song, it will not be featured in the night’s on-stage performances. Instead, the award goes to Miranda’s song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which has soared in popularity since Encanto debuted on Disney+ in November.
Who is hosting the 2022 Oscars?
Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes will serve as hosts for the Oscars in 2022. After three years without a host, just two of which were affected by the epidemic, it’s a kind of a comeback for the Academy. Kevin Hart was supposed to host the 2019 show, but he backed out before it aired after being accused of making a series of homophobic slurs in some of his older tweets.
On that platform, the hosts will not be alone. The Academy has revealed a long roster of speakers from various entertainment mediums. Legendary actresses like Jamie Lee Curtis and Bill Murray will be in attendance, as well as young sensations like Zoe Kravitz and Simu Liu, music superstars Lady Gaga and DJ Khaled, and sports legends like Serena and Venus Williams, Tony Hawk, and Shaun White.
