1. Wadden Islands
There’s something special about spending time on an island. In the north of the Netherlands lie the Wadden Islands of Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. Each with miles of cycling and hiking paths and wide beaches. Depending on the season, you can experience grand solitude or a vibrant party atmosphere here. The latter can especially be experienced on the isle of Texel, which is closest to the mainland. The Wadden Islands border the Wadden Sea, which is famous for its mud walks which you can do during low tide. Tip Take a boat trip to spot the seals!
2. Veluwe
Do you love spending time in vast forests then the Veluwe is a must! This region has two nature reserves: Nationaal Park Hoge Veluwe, and Nationaal Park Veluwezoom. The Veluwe is great to visit all year round, but especially in August when its heather fields turn into a purple blanket. Do you love photographing? The Veluwe is one of the most gorgeous places in the Netherlands for a photoshoot! The Veluwe can be explored on foot, by bike, or by car, driving from one picturesque village to another. Bordering the Veluwe is the Veluwemeer, a great place for water sports! Tip: Visit the charming village Elburg!
3. Zeeland
Clean, beaches, lots of suns, charming villages, and impressive waterworks: That’s Zeeland in a nutshell. Long ago, Zeeland was in a constant battle against the water, but the waterworks put an end to that. which you can see at artificial island Neeltje Jans. But Zeeland is more than its history. It’s one of the most popular Dutch places to spend the summer holidays. From Haamstede in the North to Cadzand in the south and everything in between. Be sure to also visit Middelburg, the capital of this region, and to take a stroll along the boulevard of Vlissingen. End the day on one of the many beaches for a gorgeous sunset!
4. South Limburg
Although the Netherlands is famous for its flat landscape, the landscape in South Limburg is completely different. With hills and little streams meandering through valleys, the picturesque villages with half-timbered houses, a great view around every corner, and ample restaurants to enjoy regional products. Visit one of the beer breweries or vineyards or grab your hiking shoes to go hiking in the hills. Have you seen enough nature? Then visit Noorbeek, Gulpen, or the city of Maastricht, with its gorgeous center. Here you can shop until you drop onto one of the terraces. Culture and gastronomy meet here.
5. Friesland
Attention all water sports fans! If you like spending time on and in the water, then Friesland should be on your list. With its many lakes and canals, this is the perfect place for your water sports holiday. The Frisian Lakes are scattered all over this province, so water is never far away. In addition to the water, Friesland has the most amazing towns. Dokkum, Sneek, Harlingen, Bolsward, this list could go on for hours because all of Friesland is great to visit. Are you here in the wintertime? And is it cold enough? Then you might be lucky and get to skate on these famous canals. End your trip to Friesland in Leeuwarden and spend your vacation in one of the holiday parks nearby!
